Step 1: resting metabolic rate

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the most commonly used, and generally the most accurate of the widely available formulas. For men: 10 × weight in kg + 6.25 × height in cm − 5 × age + 5. For women, the same with −161 in place of +5.

Mifflin-St Jeor carries roughly 10 percent average error against measured values, against 15 to 20 percent for older formulas such as Harris-Benedict, which is why it is the one used here.
