Where the fiber benefit plateaus

Reynolds and colleagues, in a dose-response analysis for the Lancet, found the benefit plateauing around 25-30 grams per day, meaning intake beyond that range shows diminishing additional benefit rather than a continued linear improvement. This is useful practical information, it gives a concrete, achievable target rather than an open-ended "more is always better" framing that can feel daunting or unclear when translating into actual daily food choices.

An honest caveat: fiber, or what fiber replaces?

Worth being direct about a limitation in how this evidence base is typically built. Much of the underlying research comes from already-metabolically-unwell populations, largely American, eating a diet dominated by highly processed food. When a trial raises fiber intake in that context, it's usually not simply adding fiber on top of an otherwise unchanged diet, it's displacing processed food to make room for fiber-rich food instead. Some of the measured improvement plausibly comes from the fiber itself, and some plausibly comes from what stopped being eaten to make room for it, and a single trial usually can't cleanly separate the two.

This is why populations that already eat comparatively little processed food, and so never had much room to "add fiber by removing processed food," sometimes do just as well on lower fiber intake than the American trial data alone would predict. The two types of fiber, and what 30 grams actually looks like

Fiber is a category rather than a nutrient, and the two broad types behave differently enough that a supplement supplying one isn’t a substitute for food supplying both.

Soluble fiber

Dissolves in water to form a gel. That gel slows gastric emptying and nutrient absorption, which blunts post-meal glucose rises, and it binds bile acids in the gut, prompting the liver to draw on circulating cholesterol to replace them. This is the mechanism behind the modest LDL reductions attributed to oats and psyllium.

How to close the fiber gap

The average wellness article mentions fibre briefly alongside a long list of other nutrients, which understates how large and consistent its supporting evidence is relative to most of that list.
