RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a 1-10 scale for rating how hard a set felt, based on how many more reps you estimate you could have completed before failure. For longevity training it solves a real problem: it lets you train hard enough to adapt without needing a max attempt to know where you are. It's a simple, equipment-free way to gauge and communicate training intensity, and when tracked consistently, it can do more than just describe a workout, it can actively inform how the next one should be adjusted.

The RPE scale in practice

RPE 10 means you couldn't have completed another rep, true muscular failure. RPE 9 means you probably had one more rep in you, but just barely. RPE 7-8, the typical target for standard working sets, means the set was hard but you clearly had 2-3 more reps available if you'd needed them. Lower RPEs, 6 and below, indicate the set felt comfortably manageable, more room than a standard working set is meant to have.

This scale is inherently subjective, it relies on your own honest self-assessment rather than an objective measurement, but it's remarkably useful in practice precisely because it captures something a fixed percentage of your max can't, how a given weight actually feels on a specific day, accounting for sleep, stress, and recovery status that a static number ignores.

This kind of adjustment, called autoregulation, uses only your single most recent logged RPE for a given exercise, rather than averaging across several sessions, and only kicks in when there's a clear signal outside the expected 7-8 working range, not as constant second-guessing of the underlying research-backed percentage the number was built from in the first place.

The full RPE scale, and how to autoregulate with it

The version of RPE used in strength training isn’t the original 6-to-20 Borg scale. It is a 1-to-10 scale anchored to repetitions in reserve, which makes it far more concrete than a general effort rating.

The full scale

  • RPE 10. No repetitions left. Absolute failure.
  • RPE 9.5. Could not add weight, might manage one more repetition.
  • RPE 9. One repetition in reserve.
  • RPE 8.5. One certain, possibly two.
  • RPE 8. Two repetitions in reserve. The most common target for productive working sets.
  • RPE 7. Three in reserve. Bar speed still visibly fast.
  • RPE 5 to 6. Four to six in reserve. Warm-ups, technique work, deload sessions.

Why it beats fixed percentages

A percentage-based program assumes your maximum is constant. It isn’t. Sleep, stress, nutrition, illness and accumulated fatigue can swing what 80 percent feels like by a wide margin on any given day. Following the number regardless means overreaching on bad days and undertraining on good ones.

RPE self-corrects. Prescribing "work up to a set of five at RPE 8" produces the right stimulus on both days, at different absolute loads.

Autoregulating the next session

The scale also gives a decision rule. If a prescribed weight came in below the target RPE, add load next session. If it came in above, hold or reduce. Over a training block this converges on genuinely appropriate loading without any testing.

The accuracy problem, and how it resolves

Newer lifters consistently underestimate how many repetitions they have left, often by a meaningful margin. The skill develops only through experience of taking sets genuinely close to failure, which is why occasional sets to true failure on safe exercises are useful calibration even though they are a poor default.

Accuracy is also better on higher-rep sets and on isolation work, and worse on heavy low-rep compound lifts, where the gap between "hard" and "no more repetitions" is narrow and arrives suddenly.

Bar speed as an objective check

Bar speed slows as a set approaches failure. Even without a tracking device, a noticeably slower final repetition is a reasonable cue that you are at RPE 8 or above, and it is more objective than how the set felt.

Half-point values exist between these anchors. The scale is the resistance-training version, distinct from the original Borg 6 to 20 scale.

How to let an RPE rating change your next session

Coverage describes RPE only as a way to log how a workout felt, without connecting it to how that log should change future programming.

The rating is an input, not a diary entry. A session that came in at RPE 9 when it was written for RPE 7 tells you to adjust the next one.

That feedback loop is the whole value. Logging the number and programming the same week regardless wastes it.
